My prayer for wisdom

1 Corinthians 2:6–7

“Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of the rulers of this age, who are passing away; but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory…”

God desires to reveal Himself and His purposes to us. So much so that He left His glory and became a man, Jesus, to live with us and reveal the Father and His glory to us. This is eloquently described in the Gospel of John, chapter 1 and also in Philippians 2:5–11.

1st Corinthians 12:7–8

“But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit.”

Note in “the Message” translation of the Bible ‘word of wisdom’ is translated as wise counsel; ‘word of knowledge’ is translated as clear understanding.

My prayer for wisdom

Dear Lord, Source of all wisdom,

Please show me Your way today. When my mind won’t settle and focus, please get my attention with Your beauty and grace. Please remove all the distractions of all the things: things left undone, things I want to do and things I am unable to do. Make way in my heart and mind for wisdom to progress through this day. Thank you for a new day to grow in relationship with You. Pick me up from the ashes of yesterday’s expectations and establish me today, refreshed in the light of Your glory. Give me courage to plumb the depths of the mysterious sea of Your delight and purpose in me. Do away with the fear of the unknown and magnify the anticipation of new discoveries with unfettered joy. I long for that kind of joy. My soul is in need of the satisfaction of deep intimacy with you, my God, Source of everything I need. Reveal what I need the most today. So, I ask for Your wisdom for today. Please give the wisdom that would breathe confidence and assurance into my weary and worried spirit. Also boldness to receive Your wisdom. For it is a holy thing, and I am just a bruised and broken reed in need of your power and glory every day. May this gift of Your wisdom be apparent and pleasant to others, not abrasive or arrogant in any way. Help me to overflow with Your peace and purpose; revealing the power that comes from surrender of my own desires and receiving You and Your desire. I want to be wise for You, through You, by You, because of You. Even as I cry out in desperation from the gray, murky smog of discouragement and hurt feelings, I trust You can and will wash away this world’s cares and fears and raise me up to see better vistas. Amen.
